Whether you have a simple cold, a flu that makes you ache and sweat, a running or stuffed nose with a sore throat, or a long term infection or recurring infection. This is a sign that your immune system has failed to defend you. We are all exposed to viruses and bacteria every day however, we only fall ill sometimes, and for some of us more often than others. The reason for this difference in susceptibility is to do with how strong and effective your immune system is. If you have a strong immune system, then even if you’re in a crowd of sick people, you shouldn’t get sick. On the other hand, if your immune system is struggling or weakened then you will get sick more often and take longer to recover.

Essentially your immune system is your bodys’ department of defence. Your immune system protects you from potentially harmful invaders by recognising and responding to them as a threat. When your immune system is functioning well, it acts like a powerful, well regulated army. It consists of several highly specialised types of white blood cells and good bacteria much the same way as an army is made up of different specialty divisions.

Factors that contribute to the weakening of your immune system include:

  • Diet Low in Fresh Fruit, Vegetables, Protein & Essential Fatty AcidsVirus cell and blood human circulatory system
  • Lack of Exercise (or Excessive Exercise)
  • Physical, Emotional & Psychological Stress
  • Lack of Sleep, Rest & Relaxation
  • Exposure to Pollution, Cigarette Smoke and/or Extremely Cold Weather
  • Lack of Sun Exposure

 

How to Strengthen your Immune System Naturally

  • Eat a diet high in colourful fruits and vegetables, as these have high levels of immune protecting nutrients, fresh is the best. Avoid produce that has been stored for long periods of time
  • Avoid sugars, white flour (bread, pasta, biscuits, cakes, etc.) and excess alcohol as these have little to no nutrients and deplete your immune system
  • Avoid or minimise stress at work and home. Stress hormones inhibit the function of all aspects of immunity. This could result in worsened infection and slow wound healing. Taking time each day for relaxation and leisure is important for healthy immune function
  • Exercise regularly. Regular, moderate exercise seems to improve immune function. Find an activity you enjoy and make it a regular part of your lifestyle for fun, fitness and a healthy immune system
  • Increase water intake to approx. 2 litres daily. Water is essential for all aspects of good health
  • Get enough sleep. Your immune system does its repair and rebuilding while you are asleep at night
  • Supplementation of essential nutrients and herbs to boost your immune system
